The suburb of Shortland was named in honour of Lieutenant John Shortland who discovered what is now Newcastle in September, 1797. The site for Cumberland Grove was previously owned by the Shortland RSL Sub-branch and occupied by the Shortland RSL licensed club and included two bowling greens and clubhouse.

The name of the village has been taken from the name of what was probably the first English manned vessel to sail into Newcastle, the Cumberland. Lieutenant Shortland had been sent in search of a number of convicts who had seized the Cumberland, a government vessel used for trading to the Hawkesbury, as it was sailing from Sydney Cove.
The developer's objective in designing Cumberland Grove has been to provide extensive low-maintenance yet eye-catching landscaping throughout the village to provide a pleasing and relaxing environment for its residents and visitors. Adjacent to the village grounds are the original RSL memorial gardens owned by the Shortland RSL Sub-branch which are used by the RSL Sub-branch members and the local community to remember their fallen comrades and family.

The village is conveniently located on what can only be described as user-friendly ground which will avoid the need for any more than one or two steps to any unit over the total area of 1.3 hectares.
Within walking distance of the village is the Shortland Wetlands area which provides walking trails and picnic areas in a peaceful nature reserve. Other recreational facilities in Shortland include Shortland Waters Golf Course and a number of parks and reserves such as Tuxford Park, Alister Street Reserve, Northcott Park and Coral Sea Avenue Reserve.
